Nirvana Box Set:

At present time there is no official word of when there will be another release. Most would say that if and when the next release comes out it will be done around the time that most record companies put out their biggest sellers during the fourth quarter of the calender year. That would mean it would come out sometime before Christmas of that particular year.

Kurt's demo tapes are reportedly currently locked in a safety deposit box. Eric Erlandson formerly of Hole made sure to collect Kurt's tapes, notebooks, etc. and save them for Courtney when Kurt died so that they would not be stolen. Eric is no longer is possesion of the tapes as of last known. There was said to be as many as 109 cassette tapes in total.

Krist, Dave & Courtney have a business partnership called the LLC that was started after Kurt died so that future Nirvana releases and issues could be dealt with. Dave, Krist & Courtney acting on Kurt's family's behalf would then all have a say in any official Nirvana releases. Courtney and Kurt's family were unhappy with the cut of the money that Dave & Krist were to make and the amount of control they had over future releases and therefore she and Kurt's family wanted to disband the LLC business partnership in 2002. That was the basis of the lawsuits between "The Estate of Kurt Cobain" & Dave and Krist at that time. Courtney sued in May 2001 to dissolve the partnership, claiming it is "non-functional."

The "Estate" said that Kurt was Nirvana and wrote about 93 percent of all Nirvana's songs over their whole catalog and therefore Krist & Dave should be happy to get what they have gotten over the years and would continued to be paid royalties for the songs they played on. Former drummer Former drummer Chad Channing was said to have about 5 percent of that remaining chunk of the songwriting royalties from the songs on Bleach. Krist & Dave argued that they were the ones actually in the band and that they were also a big part making Nirvana successful. For that reason they didn't want to lose what they felt they rightfully had coming to them and the control in future releases they had. Courtney and then manager/boyfriend Jim Barber sued to stop the release the proposed box set to release what was considered the best unreleased Nirvana song "You Know Your Right" on the Greatest Hits package. That was then released in late 2002 and has since went platinum. They felt that "You Know You're Right" would have been buried on a box set and not as profitable. Both sides came to terms on that matter soon after and that is why the "hits" package was able to be released with the song included.

Unreleased material has been held up for various reasons. First of all Nirvana's record label Geffen which Nirvana was signed on their subsidiary imprint DGC Records was merged to the conglomerate Interscope. Since then the label has been sold a few times and that legally slows down the process indefinetly. Krist even stated that he was unsure of who Nirvana's music even legally belonged to anymore. Also with Dave staying busy with his various projects including the Foo Fighters, Krist with his political aspirations and Courtney with her various run ins with the law and promoting her solo album, "America's Sweetheart" that also factors in. The good news is that a lot of rare Nirvana material has been collected and accounted for. This material though does not include much of Kurt's private recordings. Whether much of that material is worth releasing in the first place is also in question.

From wholenote.com:
"Grohl admitted that he hasn't been too hands-on with the project, with the majority of work being done by former Nirvana bassist, Krist Novoselic, and Seattle rock journalist Gillian G. Gaar. He felt fine leaving it in Novoselic's hands, since the bassist had also done the majority of the grunt work on 1996's From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah, the second posthumous Nirvana album, which compiles sixteen live tracks that span the band's career. Critics insisted that Wishkah wasn't the great lost Nirvana album since there were no unheard gems to add to the catalog, leaving the door open for the box set."

Gillian Gaar was able to compile a lengthy list of what was available outside of Kurt's private recordings. Her work appeared in the February 14, 1997 issue of Goldmine magazine. For that article go here:

At one point it was rumored such a box set would include 45 songs. Whether it is released all at once, broken down to be released a little at a time, or released at all there is no official word at this time.
