There's some offseason reading on the BU website about the UK Basketball team trip. Sounds like everyone got a chance to play - and the team generally performed well...

Any word on an announcement of this year's incoming recruits? Any late surprises based on last season's success?

i would be very surprised if there are any additions to the class. have 15 on the roster and the standard three scholly's were handed out in the fall. may not be another announcement. with the three recruits + returning group there is already a lot of strong competition for playing time.

i am keeping more of a lookout for the schedule. last report was still two games to be determined with one of those expected to be in the espn bracket buster. can't imagine espn would not include BU and any hurdles, school or league restrictions, would have been identified already.

Bracket Buster games are scheduled for Saturday, February 18. The PL has already announced that Feb 18 is one of it's designated Rivalry Weekend Games.

Check Colgate's tentative schedule and you will see that rather than the Bracket Buster, the Bison will be playing in front of 300 people in Hamilton, NY on Feb 18.

Sorry to break the news to you. Would have liked to have seen HC in the Bracket Buster as well. Such is life in the PL!

i am not ready to write the possibility off entirely yet. reasonably good sources say Flannery will be involved in the bracket buster planning discussions later this month when participants and host/visitor teams will be determined. i believe he must have good reason to believe the PL will make a scheduling accomodation if the team is invited. a slight bit of concern that this is a 'rivalry' weekend game and whether that will affect the leagues decision.

If the League does not allow the Bison, or any member for that matter given the year, to compete in an ESPN sponsored mini-tourney like Bracket Buster then they are insane. All for a contrived rivalry weekend in Hamilton? Absurd...........

Dan - Yes, the PL does insane things, sometimes more often than not.
Welcome to the pain & frustration HC fans have experienced for the last 5 years.

KenZ - I know you to be a reliable, well informed poster and I hope you're right, but the only way it happens is if more than BU is involved from the PL. The only glimmer of hope I see is that in the PL announcement of the new league schedule there is a reference that the schedule changes

"... would also provide the League with greater flexibility to accommodate television opportunities, and other needs that may arise."

Also, keep in mind, that there is a potential impact to the women's schedule too, albeit slight, in that you will lose one of the weekend doubleheaders that was supposed to be one of the benefits the revised schedule.

Finally, see below a couple of items from Andy Katz on ESPN.com posted in mid May of this year regarding the Bracket Buster for 2006. Note that the PL is not one of the 13 conferences involved in the discussions he references.

May 17
• ESPN and 13 conference commissioners will meet Tuesday at Chicago's O'Hare Airport to discuss the future of the Bracket Buster event. Equity issues with the event (who should be home and away) will be broached. The commissioners expected to attend are from the WAC, MAC, Horizon, Missouri Valley, OVC, MAAC, Southern, CAA, Sun Belt, Big West, Big Sky, America East and Mid-Continent.

May 23
• "Commissioners from 13 mostly low- and mid-major conferences met in Chicago last week about the future of the Bracket Buster Event on ESPN's family of networks. No final decisions were made except that the field will include more teams from each conference. The goal is still to put the best 20 teams (in 10 games) on ESPN's networks, with each matching two mid-level bubble teams in late February. The non-TV games are scheduled between the other conferences. Conferences want more of their membership in the event, to ease conference scheduling. This allows everyone to have an open weekend date for the Bracket Buster.

i think both HC and Lehigh are worthy of bracketbuster invites as well, but suspect that at best BU and HC will be invited this year. i appreciate the info you posted as i had not seen it previously. the logical inferences reading these items would not bode well for Bucknell. however, since these were dated earlier than the info indicating that it is still possible, i will continue to hang on to a glimmer of hope and concoct my own theory that the 13 conferences were those with broader invites and a one-off team here or there might still get an invite.

on a brighter note, i am confident in the PLs continued ascent in the conference rankings, and will hope that this will translate to the PL being on the auto invite list within a few years.

From Tom Housenick's column in the Daily Item -- mid-May...

"Bucknell is keeping open a date in February for the annual Bracket Buster tournament for Mid-Major teams. Flannery said ESPN has expressed an interest in having the Bison participate and moving a Patriot League game could be a possibility."

Upon further review of the 2 schedules that have been released (AU & CU), there are games scheduled for Saturday Jan 28 and Saturday Feb 4 with Wednesday Feb 1 open.

The women's schedule, released by HC, shows a game on Tuesday the 27th and I assumed that the men's schedule matched it. The men's & women's schedules do not appear to match exactly.

So the possibility to move games from Sat Feb 18 to Wed Feb 1 does exist in the men's PL schedule.

So now you got my hopes up. I hope you guys are right and BU + at least 1 other PL school is included in the BB!

The 2005-2006 schedule has a placeholder for the Bracket Buster game on the 18th.. I believe the Colgate game has been moved (hopefully, the BU website will update with the schedule soon) -- and a road game at DePaul was also added in December...

From what I understand, the Out of Conference schedule should include:
OOC Road Games: Duke, DePaul, Niagara, Cable Car Tournament
OOC Home Games: Villanova, St. Joe

That's a nice schedule.......very nice.

I think it is a schedule that shows how confident Flannery is in this team being competitive.

The Depaul game is probably to appease Badmus.

had not heard about DePaul, that's an interesting addtion.

can add:

@ Rider 11/18 (season opener)
Yale 11/26

even with bracketbuster that leaves 3 unknown games. at least one needs to be a home game. usual suspects Cornell, SFP and Robert Morris are all out there. they were also working on Penn and Princeton long ago, but i am not very optimistic that either of those worked out.

2 more home games to add to the mix - Cornell (12/7) and D3 Haverford (12/9). Ken - I think you're right that there still is an opening for one other game..

thanks, but uggh to Haverford. do you know dates for the Nova and St. Joe's games? i originally heard Nova 12/7 and St. Joe's on 12/21, but you have Cornell on the 7th. I later heard Nova on the 15th, but it seems like that would be in the exam period (although it is a Friday).

Sorry for the typos... Here's what I believe is accurate:

December
3 - @ DePaul
6 – Villanova
17 – Cornell
19 – Haverford
21 – St. Joseph

thanks again. i am paricularly pleased that the Villanova game is while school is in session (and not during exams). gives the students the chance to see a major college team on campus.

i am a worrier by nature, so let me share my concern. while i like the way the schedule is shaping up for this year, we don't have a team on the schedule that 'owes' us a home game for 2006-07 unless the Rider or Niagara series extends further (both are return games this year).

if we play away in the bracketbuster that would provide one return game next year. assuming it is a struggle to get visitors this year (hence Haverford) next year likely won't be any easier. we were extremely fortunate to have Nova and St. Joes under contract before last year.

I'll defend the Haverford game in that in gives Frosh and the seldom used to get some court time.......further, as a DIII, they don't impact our RPI.

This is a very good schedule - with the exception of Haverford - kudos to Pat for taking on some serious challenges.

By my count you have 11 games listed - room for 1 more if the Bracket Buster come to fruition, 2 more if not.

Just using the 2005 final RPI as a measure, and assuming a win against Boston U in the first game of the Cable Car Classic you have 6 games against top 100 RPI teams and 8 against top 150. And that does not include a possible BB game.

By comparison, the HC Schedule - if they win their first game of the San Juan Shootout and the rest of that tourney holds form - HC will have 8 top 100 games and 9 top 150. A loss in the first round of the SJ Shootout probably drops that to 6 & 7 respectively without a BB game.

Both schedules are a nice step up for the PL Out of Conference schedule. I hope they both make some noise out of conference and the other schools follow suit and strengthen their OOC schedule this year.

From Andy Katz's chat on ESPN.com today. Kinda tells you what the Bracket Buster is really about! Holding out hope though.
===========================================================

Bob (Worcester, MA): Hey Andy. Message rumors have it Bucknell wants into the Bracket Buster. Holy Cross would be a great candidate as well. The Patriot League changed it's schedule to allow some weekend flexibility. So, what are you hearing about the Patriot League being included in the Bracket Buster? True or at least a possibility?

Andy Katz: (4:36 PM ET ) The problem is the Patriot League isn't an ESPN partner. The teams that are in the Bracket Buster are all partners (i.e. have more than just one game on during the season). Bucknell may want in but as far as I know the Patriot League wasn't at the Bracket Buster meeting in the spring.

What the hell does that mean an "ESPN" partner? Is this why EPSN 2 is broadcasting St. Peters versus Rider and not Patriot League games? Is this why we get relegated to a 4:30 time slot for our Championship games?

Dan,

In a word I think the answer is yes.

Other than the PL championship game, we do not have a TV deal with any of ESPN affiliated netorks, including ESPNplus.

The Bracket Buster, for all the hype about giving mid-majors a better chance at an at large birth by improving their OOC resume, is a made for TV event, that ESPN controls to a certain extent. To get ratings for ESPN that weekend and promote it's other "partners."

Note in one of the earlier posts from Katz that the focus of the meetings was to get the 20 best games on TV, with other schools participating (i.e. picking up a game against other Bracket Buster conference teams) to make scheduling easier. ESPN only cares about the 20 TV games, they couldn't care less about the other teams and scheduling issues that an open weekend at the end of conference season may cause.

The League needs to move to become a partner.
