After the contract extension was ratified I was certainly happy to see an affirmative response to the one man/one vote concept as I feel that it is absolutely the correct method to deal with contract ratification. I was in attendance during this vote, (I was not a delegate at that time), and was proud of those that voted in favor of this change. The membership is well served by allowing the national delegates to select the national officers at conventions. Although there is no doubt that the members would make an informed decision, the ability to meet with candidates face to face, pose questions and gauge their responses in person is an invaluable tool as a preface to selecting the proper candidate.
As long as the national officers are performing their duties to the best of their abilities, I see no reason to attempt to penalize them. If they are not, then they will not survive the next election. This is a tried and true process to maximize the performance of elected officials at all levels.
The support/non-support of arbitration lawyers is a difficult question at this time due to the recent actions of Mr. Wells, who was apparently not committed to rendering a fair and unbiased ruling, as was his duty. If you discount this occurrence, then professional arbitration lawyers are eminently qualified to handle the complex issues surrounding an arbitration process. To further expand on this question and to answer another, I would resolve that all of those persons representing our craft during the arbitration process, including officers and lawyers alike, take a much firmer stance and adopt a "gloves off" approach in dealing with USPS management.
USPS management has demonstrated that they cannot be trusted, and I think we would do well to assume that posture in all of our future dealings with them. All of our craft should take a good look at the recent contracts to see what we should do next. The NALC was able to negotiate a contract while we were not. Of course, The NALC boasts a better than 95% membership rate while ours is less than ¾. See any correlation? We should now work even harder on our membership and support for the leaders of our craft.
Thank you for your questions and your interest. I heartily solicit your support.
