In reference to Bill Porter's Mom being Terry's first grade teacher, I have to tell you that she was my first grade teacher in a portable building at the new Peace River elementary school in Port Charlotte. I started school at Sallie Jones (kindergarten) and then the P.C. kids were moved over to temporary classrooms while Peace River Elem was being built. Mrs. Porter taught first grade in one portable and Mrs. Smith in another. I'll never forget the morning the boys caught a snake before class and proudly showed Mrs. Porter when she arrived at her classroom in the P.C. wilderness! The maintenance man told us that it was an "idigo racer" when he was called in to remove the creature. We had a makeshift cafeteria and carried our lunches back to our portable buildings. We didn't spend the whole of first grade in a portable because the regular building was ready during that school year. At Peace River I had Mrs. Staley for second, Mrs. Anderson for third, Mrs. Humphreys in fourth, Mr. Bosserdet in fifth (the year Wayne Sallade joined our class) and the wonderful Mrs. Hilenski (Phyllis' mom) in sixth along with Mrs. Ross for math and Mr. Ellis for science. However, Mrs. Porter remains one of my favorite teachers. I should add that Peace River never had May Day celebrations like the ones at Sallie Jones, but the one May Day I saw in kindergarten has always remained in my memory.
