Subject: Hurricane Donna

Yes I remember Hurricane Donna!'

I remember just starting the 1st grade. Mrs. Daniels was my teacher by the way. Our next door neighbor Mr. Lawless came over and said we were excepting "Tidal Waves" from the storm and we should go to Charlotte High School. On the way there someone had put a fake silver Christmas Tree in the road, and as I looked thru the windshield with rain on it I thought for sure that was the foam from the tidal wave coming down the street. There were electrical lines down everywhere. In the car with me was my grand parents Goldman & Ruby Gillikin, my uncle Steve Gillikin my mom JoeAnn and my brother Douglas. At Charlotte High School we ran up and down the halls.
When we went home the next morning the winds were really starting to blow. We lived at 425 Ann St. in Punta Gorda. Steve and I were standing in the carport and we saw a turtle crawling across the driveway. The wind had to be blowing at least 80 mph. I convinced Steve to go out and get that turtle. He did and barely could stand up because of the wind. When he got back in we both caught hell and had to go back in the house. I also remember seeing a piece of tin start blowing end over end right thru Mackies carport. It was a good thing no one stuck their head out the door. After the storm was over some of the neighbor hood gang Burton, Mackie, Arne Simpson, Steve, Douglas myself and a few I can't remember took this old wooden boat and sailed it in the ditches and on some of the roads. I don't think we had any water in the house but I remember it getting real close. A couple of homes in our neighborhood lost there roofs but just the gravel & tar paper not the plywood or trusses. That is about it for my memories of Hurricane Donna.
