Obadiah 1:4 Though thou exalt thyself as the eagle, and though thou set thy nest among the stars, thence will I bring thee down, saith the LORD.
Allegories in the Bible may at times picture more than on object, person, nation etc. As I came to this verse the other day I immediately saw America in the eagle. Who could not see the glorious emblem of our republic in the symbol chosen to represent her so long ago. Ah, yes, the majestic eagle which soars so high and is so terrible in it's attack on a beast of prey. It is merciless in it's defense of it's young in their nest. The eagle makes it's nest in high places and many times in the rocks of sheer mountains. It is seen as the apex of the winged fowl creation.
The Lord, through Obadiah, wants us to see what he sees in a nation that soars like the eagle and exalts itself. The preceding verse to verse 4 sets the context of the pronouncement. Obadiah 1:3 The pride of thine heart hath deceived thee, thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground? Verse 4 is God's answer then is found in verse 4 to the attitude stated in verse 3 in the last clause: "Who shall bring me down to the ground?"
For more than 200 years the "mighty eagle" has been invincible in conflict. We have excelled in industry, science, medicine, arts and invention. We have given to the poor around the world and have fed much of the world with little in return. For most of those years we had the attitude that it was all because of God that we were so blessed and invincible and could not be brought down. Oh, how our attitude has changed. We don't seem to need God anymore as a nation so we have put the "spare tire" back in the trunk until the next "911" befalls us. Granted there are still those among us who pray earnestly for this nation to turn back to the God of our foundation but we are getting fewer in number and have turned to lip service instead of knee service to our God.
Proverbs 16:18 Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.
Isaiah 14:13-15 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. 15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit. Five times haughty pride was displayed in this passage and the end result was the rounding answer from God. "NO YOU WON'T"!!!
America has been to the moon and it, with other nations, has set it's sights on the moon and Mars for colonization. Whether we get there is anyone's guess but I will declare unto this nation and any other lifted in pride; You may get there but God will bring you to the ground and hell just as He has promised Satan and all others if we do not honor Him in this endeavor.
Psalms 9:17 The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.
