Isaiah 25:9 And it shall be said in that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, and he will save us: this is the LORD; we have waited for him, we will be glad and rejoice in his salvation.
There are some things that are well worth waiting for. Simeon was an old man who had been promised that he would not die until he had seen the Saviour. Luke 2:25-26 And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him. 26 And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ.
For many this would cause them to hope that Jesus would delay in coming as Saviour. Not Simeon. He was an old man and we are not told how long he waited for his eyes to embrace the Holy One of Israel but one thing is sure. He welcomed the sight of Jesus even though he new death was near. Luke 2:28-30 Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, 29 Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: 30 For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,
One of the Psalmists wrote in Psalms 33:20-22 Our soul waiteth for the LORD: he is our help and our shield. 21 For our heart shall rejoice in him, because we have trusted in his holy name. 22 Let thy mercy, O LORD, be upon us, according as we hope in thee. Even though the natural man does not rejoice in the prospects of death the inward soul of the redeemed long for and wait for the day when we may be in His presence.
King David wrote in the Psalms 130:5-8 I wait for the LORD, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope. 6 My soul waiteth for the Lord more than they that watch for the morning: I say, more than they that watch for the morning. 7 Let Israel hope in the LORD: for with the LORD there is mercy, and with him is plenteous redemption. 8 And he shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities. Notice again the emphasis on the soul as opposed to the natural man and it's desire for natural things. People who are connected to the Lord in a strong spiritual way have this inward longing to be with Him. The redeemed have that inward excitement at the thought He might return at any moment. It is a blessed hope and expectation and we patiently wait for His appearing.
Isaiah had this longing: Isaiah 64:4 For since the beginning of the world men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen, O God, beside thee, what he hath prepared for him that waiteth for him.
Are we that anxious and excited at the promise of the return of our Lord for His Church? Are we as a bride that waits impatiently for the return of her betrothed so that the wedding might take place? A longing for our Saviour is as it should be with the Church.
We have a longstanding promise from our Lord that He will return for His redeemed at the appointed time. We don't know the day nor the hour but we do know He is coming because He has said so and we believe Him.
John 14:1-3 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. 2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
"I've Been A Waitin"
1st Verse
Many years I've traveled on this weary road
Watched the fleeting changes, tried to share some load;
Now my work is finished, steps are mighty slow,
I've been a waitin' Lord to go.
Chorus
I've been a waitin', waitin' on this shore,
Long I've traveled, ain't a gonna travel no more;
Shades of evening fallin', steps are gettin' slow,
I've been a waitin' Lord to go.
2nd verse
Feel a little weary, sight a getting dim,
But I have my Savior, I can trust in Him;
Many friends are yonder, by the river's flow,
I've been a waitin' Lord to go.
Chorus
3rd Verse
Come a little closer snow-white angel band,
While I cross the river to that better land;
Open wide the portals, play a little slow,
I've been a waitin' Lord to go.
Chorus
