Exodus 12:2-3,6-7 This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you. 3 Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house: 6 And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening. 7 And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it.

As I think of the new year upon us and as I write this on the last day of 2014 I look toward a new beginning if you will. The event that came to Israel at the command of God was a new beginning for them. According to the words in the verses cited we see that their new beginning was to start with the blood of a lamb.

This is very significant to us today and is imperative to us as Christians to enter into this event pictured by the blood and the placing of the blood on the door posts. This event was part of the law that God gave to Israel and Paul let's us know in no uncertain terms that for us the law is a "schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ " (Gal. 3:24)

What can we glean from this passage and others like it. If this law is a schoolmaster then what is it teaching us.

Think with me for a moment about this event. The Jews were in bondage to Egypt. God had sent Moses to lead them out and they were on the threshold of embarking on a new journey. The event marked the birth of the nation Israel which would as a nation be under the leadership of God Almighty. The event would be the liberation of the Jews and the death of Egypt. The firstborn of every living person or animal would die on the night of the killing of the lamb and the putting of it's blood on the door posts of their houses. Every house that had the blood was spared and every house that had not the blood had their firstborn killed by the death angel.

Looking ahead from that point in time to we see the event depicted the death of the "Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world". (John 1:29) All who are under the blood will be spared. All who are not will suffer the "second death" (Rev. 20:14).

All Christians share in the common starting point in their Christian life. Their "new beginning" starts with being placed under the blood of atonement by faith in the finished work of Jesus on the cross (depicted by the door posts in the verses above). You cannot start this new beginning until you are under the blood of Christ and if you are not under this atoning blood then no matter what profession you have you are marked for the second death.

As we start this new year may we realize that just as Israel could not start their journey with God until they partook of the passover we cannot start our journey until we are partakers in the Lamb of God. Jesus called this event as being "born again" (John. 3:3,7). It may be understood as being born anew and is spiritual in nature rather than physical. Regardless what you call it you cannot celebrate you life anew until this takes place.

January 1 marks the new year on the calendar and corresponds to the sun starting it's journey northward to the summer solstice. Your "new birth" day starts your new life with Jesus. It is is tied to the Sun as Jan. 1 is tied to the sun. Just as Israel had a specific time of her birth we have a specific time of our new beginning in Jesus.

As we enter into this new year of 2015 may we endeavor to remember what our "new beginning" really means. May God's blessings be on you all throughout 2015 and may we honor God in all.

Our new beginning did begin with Christ's atonement, no matter when our individual walks began. And we share that common bond as Christians. I'm proud to know you, brother Dwight!
