Would second Ian's suggestions though Diskos and Tertsa are a bit of a drive.
Its not our favourite town (though many love it) but Plakias has a lovely naturist beach in a stunning location. Plakias can be reached by local bus.
Paleochora and Sougia in south west Crete are also worth looking into. They can also be reached by bus.
You may have difficulties in some places with accommodation in August.
