HAPPY LATINS : Upon learning that Chile will host next year's Miss Earth, several Latin pageant fans expressed great delight in the news. Oscar Aguirre, the Miss Earth Organization's representative in Chile, said: "For Chile, to be chosen as the venue for Miss Earth is like winning the soccer finals against Germany and Australia because both countries also wanted to host the pageant." Juli�n Alvarez, the Colombian in charge of the event in Latin America, commented that Chile was selected due to its "geographical diversity." Erika Niklistchek, Miss Earth Chile 2004, stated that the pageant will allow the world to learn more about Chilean customs and way of life.(Las Ultimas Noticias, Santiago, 10/25/05)

in the world after Miss Universe and Miss World.

And it only took four years to do so! Reasons for Miss Earth's emerging popularity: universally appealing cause, beautiful and competitive candidates, free franchise, attractive prizes, and an aggressive recruiting of candidates and sponsors on the part of its organizers, Carousel Productions. Since its inception in 2001, Miss Earth has undergone a rather quick evolution; Miss International, on the other hand, seems to have been frozen in time and is simply uninteresting. And with Miss Earth's increasing popularity and prestige, more and more countries are staging national pageants to select representatives to Miss Earth. The placements of Irma Dimas of El Salvador and Vanessa de Roide of Puerto Rico, have convinced pageant officials in these countries to launch a nationwide search for the next representatives in 2006. As for Miss International to maintain its primacy, perhaps the organizers should consider bringing the pageant to Manila next year.
