Date Posted: 22:41:13 04/26/02 Fri William Lopes, the son of my sister Sandra (Gaines) Lopes H.I. 1965, has won the prestigious Churchill Scholarship. The scholarship pays all expenses, approximately $25,000 to live and study at Cambridge University. In September he will start "Part III of the Mathematical Tripos," the equivalent of a master's degree. In June Mr. Lopes will graduate from the University of Chicago with majors in mathematics and physics. As a sophomore he won the school's Goldwater Scholarship which is awarded to the school's top science student to cover all expenses for the final two years. William is regarded to have the best mathematical mind seen at the University in thirty years.
