Subject: Egyptian Paste recipe, for the web page

Egyptian Paste

Soda Feldspar 400 g
Kaolin (white clay) 60 g
Ball Clay (fine grain clay) 60 g
Soda Bicarbonate 60.3g
Soda Ash (natron) 60.g
Whiting (calcium) 50.g
Fine White Sand 80.g
Bentonite Clay 20. g
----------------------------------------------

Sieve and put in a plastic bag. (take care not to inhale any dust...) It is best to wear a nose and mouth covering. When the whole lot is well mixed take other plastic bags and weigh out for the following colors:

Green= 5% Chrome Oxide
Strong turquoise= 3% Black Copper Oxide
Light turquoise=3% Pink Copper Carbonate
Purple= 3% Manganese Oxide
Brown = 3% Red Iron Oxide.
Dark Blue= 2% Cobalt Carbonate
Yellow= 3% Vanadium Pentoxide
-------------------------------

If the mix is hard to form, add a little ball clay. This is not a clay like substance. It is rather brittle and takes compression to hold shape. If you must add more clay, note that you will have to increase the temperature. The amount will just have to be found through trial and error.

Form the "clay" into long coils and cut them with a sharp knife, making the portions identical. Your beads will now be similar in size. Roll each portion in your hands. Pierce the bead with a toothpick and use the toothpick as a holder... rolling it on a smooth surface. Remove wire or toothpick (clay will shrink) and allow the bead to dry. The salts will migrate to the surface of the bead and, when fired, will become the glaze. Do not remove the "scum" or the salt on the surface. There is, however, not enough glaze there to let the beads stick to the surface you are firing on. They may be fired on a kiln-washed shelf in a kiln, or they may be fired on a refractory surface with an acetylene torch. Take all safely precautions with firing. A protective mask and gloves required, as is the refractory surface and a poker to move the beads. Slow heating of the beads is recommended to prevent splitting. You must allow internal water to evaporate before the surface shrinks.

If you wish, you may fire the beads on a brick in an open fire. Due to the gas release of the salts, you do not wish to do this in your fireplaace. Take care this is done with good ventilation!

-----------------
Note that this is a work in progress for a web page. If you have any questions please leave a message.

These beads will be be ready at about 1000 C.
In western potter's terms that is known as pyrometric cone 08
It is 1700f.
