You can't stay on Sipadan anymore effective 1 Jan 05 - the state government has moved all resorts off the island in order to protect it. You can stay at nearby Mabul island (quite a few resorts there) or Kapalai and make day trips to Sipadan for diving/snorkelling.

If Sipadan is within your budget, most resorts at Perhentian Kecil and Redang shouldn't be a problem. You're talking about quite different standards too in terms of quality of snorkelling/diving and they're at quite different locations far apart - Sipadan (as well as Mabul/Kapalai) is located off the southeast coast of Sabah in East Malaysia while Perhentian and Redang are quite close to each other in the northeast corner of West Malaysia.

Perhentian Kecil is more of a backpacker's island with a lot of small chalets and resorts while Perhentian Besar and Redang are slightly more upmarket. Both Perhentian and Redang offer quite good snorkelling while Sipadan/Mabul/Kapalai are more of a diver's haven.

Sorry I don't have more info on resorts at Perhentian Kecil or Mabul/Kapalai. For more info on Redang resorts, check out the Resorts section on my main site.

Alex.

well nicola u asked snorkelling.. so in my opinion better to pick Redang rather than Sipadan. redang is way much cheaper too.

if u're going for dives then i strongly recommend sipadan.
