Subject: Berjaya Snorkeling

Hi. Does anyone know whether Berjaya Redang Resort provides snorkelling trips to parts other than the Marine Park? Do they charged extra and how much?

Hi Maddy,

I was there in March 2001 and I remember it was just Marine Park and nothing else. And you had to pay a fee for the trip (besides the mandatory RM5). Things may have changed so you may want to check with the resort first.

BTW, if you really do stay there and find the food too expensive, there is a local eatery called Mutiara Laut just a short walk from the resort.

Anyway, do bear in mind that if it's snorkelling and marine life that you're looking for, Berjaya is not the place to go as they do not have any housereef (too far out anyway). The waves can be quite big at times too.

Have a nice trip!

Thanks justbackfromredang & engpix. justbackfromredang, do you mean the gift shop in Berjaya? If not where is it? How do I go about booking the snorkeling trip? Are the spots they bring you any good? Oh dear, I do not have my own equipment.

oh yeah u bet much things have changed . just back from redang . the locals have a stand infront of the gift shop and they have a package 60rm for 5 stops around the island.
start at 9plus stop at 2. they very good as they will swim with u and stuff. no worries at all.

anyway for u i recommend u to get ur own snorkels and fins as their snorkels are quite washed up and they provide no fins.

Just came back from Berjaya Beach resort. Yep, the locals did have a store outside the gift shop, but it is RM60 for round island snorkelling (RIS), 5 places (does not include the Marine park). So we went outside searching for other operators and found one ( abt 5 mins walking out from the guardhouse, the next "building" u see after "Aima Fish Grill"), called "Boat Arabi Services", offering RM50 for a total of 5 places including Marine Park, but u have to pay the RM5 fee on entering Marine Park. Snorkelling gear and life vests provided, and quite new too. Nice boatman too - he swims with my cousin (holding her hand, hah, hah)as a guide for the 1st two stops when he saw that she is new to snorkelling and is a poor swimmer.

BTW, Boat Arabi Service in the same "building" as the makan place "Restoran Hazeme" (both appears to be family business as the man whom we book the RIS thro' is called Hazeme) which offers value for money food, much cheaper than Berjaya! A meal (RM 20) at Palm Restaurant costs can cover at least 3 meals there. We stayed at Berjaya for 4 days, and had all our meals at Hazeme restoran. Should try the crispy squid and grilled fish.
