Subject: Visiting Redang from Spain

We are two Spanish friends and we will spend 4 days in Redang, from 5th to 8th of August. We are looking for white sand, crystal water and a very nice resort with see view. We spect somethig not very crowed. What do you think is the best Resort to stay at Redang? What do you recomend us?

But we have other doubt: perhaps Redang is to crowd and should be better to stay at Lang Tengah; what do you think?

Other thing; we have our flight tickets from KL to Kota Bharu. We know this is not the best place to go to Redang, but we what to visit KB. Do you know how much does a taxi cost from KB to Merang?

So tree questions:
1-What resort do you recomend us in Redang?
2-What is better: Redang or Lang Tengah?
3-The cost for a taxi from Kota Bharu to Merang.

Thanks and best regards from Spain
(sorry for my poor English)

Carlos

I must be very clear that there is no guarantees. There is just too many factors during this peak period (June to
September). Many resort operators are working hard to get as many customers and it depends very much on the instance for each island and each resort. I will give my two-cents worth to the three questions the best I can. First I will tell you some background information regarding my personal trip and the views and information from others I have met.

Let me state that I have only been to Redang Island in September and October of 2002 and have not visited the
other two islands. I have met people who have been to these two islands: Perhentian Besar and Lang Tengah and researched over them over in 2001 and 2002. I would like to visit these two islands myself before they are over commercialized.

Since the research of 2001 and 2002, there have been additional resorts added to Lang Tengah; from two resorts to four resorts today on this small island. Perhentian island now has at least five resorts today.

In my opinion all three islands have 'grown' to allow more people to stay. Having said that, Redang Island is more popular as it is closer to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur by car or coach, and mostly by word of mouth. It is also made famous by a movie released in late 90s. Nevertheless, I have seen Pasir Panjang beach on the eastern side of Redang Island. I have to agree with the forum owner, Alex, that it is one of the best white powdery sandy beaches I have seen in this part of the world. Please take note that this beach Pasir Panjang changes over time, in September the lower half is covered with pieces of dead corals, at least 70%, very difficult to walk without footwear. The upper half has no traces of dead corals. Then in October, the upper half of Pasir Panjang
beach is covered with pieces of dead coral about 5%. I don't need footwear but visually not as 'clean' as seen during my first visit.

Your questions and answers ...
> 1-What Island is more crowed these days:Redang or Perhentian Besar?

My gut feeling says that Redang is going to be crowded compared to Perhentian. I can't say for sure as I have
not been to the expanded Perhentian Besar with at least 5 resorts. Eastern Redang island has at least a total of 12
resorts, Pasir Panjang has 10 of the 12 resorts. Pasir Panjang is about 2 kilometres long.

> 2-What island is less crowed these days: Redang, Perhentian Besar or Lang Tengah?

My guess would be Redang would be the most crowded, followed by Lang Tengah, small island with four resorts and then Perhentian Besar as it is much bigger than Lang Tengah.

> 3-The cost for a taxi from Kota Bharu to Merang.

I don't have specific information on this question. My guess for the taxi should be about 200 Ringgit Malaysia. I do have a contact at a travel agency who is very helpful. You can write to Pinganchorage of KT , they should be able to give you a current and more accurate answer regarding transport cost from Kota Bharu to Merang Jetty. There are coaches plying between KB and KT.

Your English is quite good and I understood all of it. I wish you a happy and pleasant journey to Malaysia.
