Subject: First trip to redang...( Urgently need advise Please help:)

Hi everyone, nice to see such a informative website or rather forum. Hope u guys here can help me with my first trip to redang. Staying for 3 nights at Laguna resort.

Questions:

- can anyone share how much do I have to spent for renting equipment and fins? cos i would be at leguna and the 3 free trips doesnt come with rental of equipment.

-is it advisable to buy the snorkelling set in singapore or rent over there? Is it cheaper and safer to buy in singapore?

-is there anywhere tt sell underwater dispoable cameras

-wat are some of the activities over there not to be miss.
heard that there are some pubs over there which are the nearer and better ones?

-is the jungle trekking and island tour worth it?

thanks a lot!!

On Redang, equipment rental typically costs about RM10 per piece (mask+snorkel, life-jacket and fins are considered 3 separate pieces) for the duration of your stay. Some resorts do not rent fins out to snorkellers in order to protect the corals (many who don't know how to use fins properly damage the corals by standing on them or kicking them).

If you're considering buying, a reasonable set comprising mask, snorkel and fins will cost you anywhere from S$70 upwards. If you're concerned about hygiene, the snorkel is probably the most important piece to own since that goes into your mouth for breathing. If you need powered masks, then you should also plan on buying that to make sure you can see clearly since it's not advisable to wear contacts while snorkelling.

If you're planning on snorkelling trips fairly often, get your own set - at least you can ensure proper fit and comfort. It may not always be possible to find your size especially during peak season when many people may be renting equipment.

Some resorts do sell underwater disposable cameras but again this is dependent on demand (and probably pricier than on the mainland). If you're going during peak season, best to buy beforehand.

I don't drink, so can't advise much about pubs. Laguna has bars that sell beer etc. in their disco/karaoke room and the bar above their gift shop.

As for trekking, whether it's worth it depends on what you're after. If you are interested in nature (insects, small creatures, plants, mangroves etc.), you'll always find something that interests you. If you love seaview panoramas from high places, there are trails that lead you to hill tops.

For other information on what to do, there's a lot more info on the main website at www.redang.org. This is just the forum.

Rgds,
Alex

I'm going in 2 weeks time (1st trip too). I bt. Kodak's underwater+sport disposable camera for $16. There are 27 shots in it. Its widely available in regular photo shops and stores.

Regarding snorkelling - do resorts like Berjaya rent out powered goggles, typically for 500 degree spec-wearers?
