I guess the long drive from Sgp to KT must have put many off driving there, so not many have any tips to share. There was an excellent writeup on the forum from someone who drove there a few months ago (think it's still there, just scroll down in the main list to find it). I have only driven from KL to KT but not Sgp to KT (I prefer the overnight coach). So I'll just share what I've heard from others...

The route via N-S highway, exit Yong Peng to Segamat & Kuantan is probably slightly faster (better roads) and is used by most of the coaches. However, this also depends on what time of day you're travelling as it's likely that this route also has heavier traffic esp. in the day.

The coastal route via Mersing is probably slower going (longer, no highway, narrower roads) but more scenic and relaxed (less traffic).

Safety really depends on what kind of driver you are. Once you're off the highway and on normal trunk roads, you'll probably need to overtake from time to time and I've seen my fair share of daredevils. Of course, you also need to watch out for animals that may wander onto the road.
