Subject: Some info regarding planning Redang trip
In reply to: Inex 's message, "HI, I'm planning a trip to Rendang and I need some advice..." on Tue, Aug 06 2002, 13:16:42

>Hello all, I'm planning a trip to Redang towards the
>end of Sept, and I would like to know if theres any
>dos and donts..

Avoid the weekends if you can. It is going to be very crowded from August 31st to September 14th (thanks to Alex website - oops! no pun intended - just looking from http://ak_sgp.tripod.com/p01-intro.htm), school holidays and the publicity, More More Cha Inn - Summer Holiday movie has drawn many tourists around the world. I just hope vistors don't treat Redang island like it was Orchard Road or East Coast Park, there won't be people picking up the trash for them.

Make sure you have your tickets confirmed otherwise, one can find themselves stranded. My friend had to take late coach back and found himself in Singapore at 6AM. Go late, comeback early morning. He took the chance of getting his return when he got to KT bus terminal.

>I'm planning a 3 days 2 nights trip for 6 and I budget
>it to be around SGD 250 to SGD 300 per person, is that
>a safe estimate?

Yes, it is safe estimate for places like Redang Pelangi. A buddy of mine was there end July for a 4D3N package, paid about 500 riggit plus for return sea transfers, room and board, 3 meals a day. Said it cost less than the other resorts he checked out. He took Transnasional business class, he was not impress - could not sleep through out the journey there and back - bumpy and noisy. Cost only 33 riggit coming back. The return was worse for him, said the seats was dirty and had a ring of mite bites on his wrist when he woke - saw it too - did not look nice and he said it itches. On the other hand, no one else has complained about the mites. I suppose he was unlucky.

>Another thing is that I'm not a good swimmer, is it
>safe for me to scuba dive?

We asked my buddy if the water was calm, and he reassure my wife that is was - she's not a good swimmer and afraid of the water and especially the sea. All 4 days, Pasir Panjang beach had clam waters. He advised to be careful at Marine Park though, the drop off after a few meters out was pretty deep. Besides, you can always use a life vest if you don't plan on snorkelling below the waterline.

That's the thing about scuba diving, you don't need to be a good swimmer. Many folks get the idea that you must be a good swimmer to do basic scuba diving. BTW, I only snorkel but swim in relatively clam waters without lifevest

If you already have diving license then the dive master should be able to take you to clam waters, and also advise you on the day to day water conditions.

>I read in one of the replies about Transnational VIP
>Bus service, and seems the feedback regarding their
>service is pretty good. May I know where to book it
>and how much does it cost? And how to we get back from
>redang to Singapore? By the same service?

Alex Kang (moderator of this forum) has this webpage that has detail information about Transnasional, easy to read and navigate... here it is

>Is it advisable to prebook our accomodations in
>advance via phonecall or online booking?

Better do it now, the September school holidays are just around the corner. Phone calls should be the fastest way to do the booking... don't know if the resort you pick will have online booking - I doubt except for Berjaya Beach Resrot. Usually, bookings are done by e-mail, faxes or phone calls - payment by TT.

Good luck on your planning.
