Subject: Bikin Ban is not in effect - Federal Government won't have it.
In reply to: Helen 's message, "Honeymoon at Berjaya Rendang Beach Resort" on Tue, Oct 15 2002, 5:44:46

The Federal government won't allow the bikini ban as it will likely affect the tourism industry among other reasons such as political cloud, control and command over the states. Neigbouring Thailand is so close to Kulau Terengganu, thus it is imperative that such decisions are thought out carefully. And they have, bikini ban is still not a reality in Terengganu.

I included an excerpt from Redang Island Rendezvous website about the bikin thingy...

"There's talk about this 'no-bikini' thing in Terengganu.
Well, that's all it is at this moment - talk. The local
PAS ruling party wants to impose this, but the federal
government has not given their consent. If this came to
pass, it might actually hurt the tourism industry in
Terengganu since the islands are one of the key
attractions. ..."

The lastest news, as of this week, told to me by a family member who read the daily local newspaper. The locals Muslim tourists are not allow to swim in the same pool, each hotel is expected to cater two pools, one for Muslim women and the other for Muslim men. This is imposed by the Terengganu government and they have 'jurisdiction' over the Muslim community because there are two laws: civil and religious laws. So this rule and ban is imposed on anyone who is of the Muslim faith and I think even if they are visitors from another country it applies to them.

Correction and Update!
Elections are not due until a couple of years, the Prime Minister has announced his hand over to Deputy P.M. later half of next year 2003. Hope this cheers you up. I had originally thought that with him stepping down, there would be a call for the general elections. I quite relief myself.

Berjaya Redang Beach Resort (off Teluk Dalam Kercil beach) is the most luxury hotel on Redang island, a little too 'sterile' for some but if one wants a 4+ star hotel, this is it: in-house phone, cable t.v. with remote, 100% cellphone connection, nice buffet spread, nice resturants (2), really nice cabanas, a floating jetty for those who prefer not to have a water landing, the works... come next year, there's even a airstrip for those who prefer to fly into Redang.

Guests at Pasir Panjang beach have to do a wet landing, quite natural and down to earth, back to basics, peronally I like it, adds a nice touch to the whole vacation.

I bet you'll have a happy honeymoon on Redang island. August is really a good month. You may want to avoid the school holidays if you prefer more privacy.

We were there in July. We didn't stay at Berjaya but at The Aryani, Merang, a authentic resort with great service. The resort arranged a private boat charter for us to go snorkeling and island cruise. We visited Berjaya Bay. It's beautiful and serene bay. The beach and water are so clear & inviting. We enjoyed diving off from the roof of our boat into the crystal clear water. But there isn't much reef.

Our boat operator brought us to some other islands like Bidong and what they called 'one tree island', the corals there are more colorful, alive, natural and besides the boat operators, it's just us - all the privacy and the attention of the operator. Operators are a chinese couple and they guide us underwater, showing us different types of corals, shells & fishes (we saw some barracudas, baby sharks and especially 2 big Napolean Wrasse nudging each other, what a lovely sight), chat with us and even loan us their personal fins for free. We took the kayak & hop onto it whenever we are tired of snorkeling. Excellent service and food comes well presented too ! nfact, we were amazed that such professional service exists at Redang when we thought there were mainly small malay operators, with small 4-6 seater boats, who drives and put you there. The boat is big, clean & even has a toilet too. Certainly the highlight of our trip. You should try them out if you can and try the islands beyond the Puala Redang. Redang is just getting too crowded !

But I'm sure you will enjoy yourself at Redang. Have a wonderful honeymoon. We did.
