Aston Villa, Derby County, Preston NE, and Stoke all competedin a 4 team baseball league. the first season was in 1890.
originally 8 teams were supposed to be in the league, but only 4 could be relied upon to turn up.

Jack devey, the famous aston villa captain, who captained vla to 5 league championshps, and 3 fa cup wins, was a talented outfield player who made his debut for aston villa in a baseball match.

for a peiod, derby county were a much better baseball side than football.

aswel as the 4 stated teams in the league, LeytonOrient lso had a heavy interest in baseball, running their own team from 1889.

from this, i think it poves that older football clubs are sporting institutions, not just football clubs,

the older clubs that participated in baseball, were when baseball was a new and exciting spr, andhad it not been for assosiation football, would of been one of englands leading sports.

not only did early teams play baseball, and soccer, but also rugby and cricket on occasions.

each team now probably runs about 10 or more soccer teams, U18, U15, reserves, womens sides, youth sides etc, villa even have their own badminton side.
Believe or not, britain was the first country to win the world baseball championship!!
Also, Sheffield United cricket club still excists today
