Thanks for your little tale – very interesting (and apologies that it’s taken a while to respond but things have been very hectic). Regarding the operating theatres, you’re right – they’re not mentioned on the Virtual Tour – the reason being that it was all taken from certain video footage which didn’t include the theatres. I’m sure there’s some photos of them in Ray Hurley-Castle’s Conquest 2002 section though – and indeed among the “Last Days of Patton” stills. There’s a few more theatre pics that we’ve got which will added before long too.
Regular Shrine contributor Jeanne Hopkins says this: “In answer to Mike Moody's interesting notes - Yes, circa 1952, main surgery was performed, and the Operating Theatre situated in the long corridor opposite 4/5 wards.”
You are right in thinking though that the CRCMH wasn’t really an “accident & emergency” hospital. I’ve no doubt that they had the expertise and facilities to handle the occasional pressing case (and certainly a lot of surgery was undertaken by the General Medical Unit), but there was no Casualty Department to speak of (according to former CRCMH Consultant Physician John Lister). Wexham Park would have handled most A&E cases in the area since it opened and, well, it continues to do so really. I think that most of your thoughts here are pretty well spot on, so there’s not really much more to add!
