Here's one expert in the field -
Dr Qazi Rahman is an academic at the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London. He studies the biology of sexual orientation and the implications for mental health and is the co-author of "Born Gay? The Psychobiology of Sex Orientation"

And an article of his summarizing the current scientific evidence-

No, it is not proof. However, the evidence clearly suggests that same-sex attractions are almost certainly biologically based.

That said, some experts have noticed a connection between childhood sexual abuse and sexuality. The unproven theory is that early sexual experiences can "imprint" on a young, prepubescent brain in such a way that the experiences forever affect sexual attraction. Some fetishes may begin that way, and some affinity for bondage or sadomasochism. Less intense attractions may develop this way also, for example if one's first sexual experience is with a red head that might begin a life-long attraction to red heads.
