Subject: Workman's Compensation

A friend of mine is a woodworker and works in a non-union shop. He was sent out on a delivery and it was necessary for him to unload the truck by himself (weights of 100 lbs. +). He injured his back which required him to be out of work for five days. Yes, he did seek medical attention and the doctor prescribed muscle relaxants and anti-inflammatory medicication, one of which made him drowsy. The doctor told him to rest his back completely. On the fifth day he telephoned the doctor for x-ray results. No damage showed up on the x-ray so my friend who was feeling a little better thought he would go back to work and give it a try (his employers called a few times to see when he would be back).

The question? Is it a requirement that his employer pay him for days missed due to this injury on the job (workman's compensation doesn't pick up until 10 days out, from what I understand). He missed 5 days pay and the overtime he would have received had he put in a 40 hour week.
