Hacienda- A Hacienda was a landed estate or a group of properties that was owned by an absentee landlord and produced a variety of crops for the local market. It was significant because it reinforced the colonial power structure and provided security in an unstable economy. An example of a hacienda was the property owned by Esteban Trueba in The House of the Spirits.

Mestizo – Mestizo refers to a person that is mixed Indian and European ancestry. This is important because mestizos make up a large portion of the population in Latin American and in colonial times they were able to integrate with European society to form a large middle class. This term also reveals the spread of European society and the racial caste system in colonial Latin America. An example of a mestizo would be the illegitimate children of Esteban Trueba in The House of the Spirits.

Mulattos- This term refers to people of mixed European and African descent. It is significant because this class represents a large portion of the population in Latin America today however, it is often not recognized. Examples of mulattos are the ancestors of slaves taken from Africa by European colonialist.

Latifundia- A Latifundia was a grant from the Spanish royalty that gave out large portions of land and the people living on that land to colonial settlers. However, this land was not heritable. It is significant because it represented the power structure of colonialism and showed how the Spanish tried to control land in Latin America.

Criollo- This is the Spanish term that refers to the native Latin Americans. This was important because new settlers had to deal with and fight with native Latin Americans. Examples of these were the Aztecs. Many criollos were wiped out by smallpox which was brought over by the Spanish conquistadors.

“Obedezco pero no cumplo”- I obey but I do not do exactly what I am told. This philosophy was significant because it was the philosophy of many Spanish settlers who had been granted Encomiendas. It shows the discontinuity between the desires of the Spanish royalty and what was actually happening in Latin America. An example of this was that encomiendas were supposed to be temporary stewardships of Indians yet they often ended up being slavery because of local authority.
