So, you guys should be pretty on top of this story, since we discussed it the first week of classes and the last week of classes.
In this story, GGM does a really good, sarcastic and descriptive analysis of what pretty much all of Lat.Am. was by the 1960s (the story was written in 1962). The thing that caught my eye the most was the fact that the story could be used to analyze events from the past or what we now know was the future back in '62. For example, in last week's discussion of the story, someone talked about the Father's figure as representing the old aspects of Catholicism which were rejected by many priests after Vatican II.
GGM criticizes as many aspects of Latin American life, culture, politics and society as he can, and, as we learned in class, people seemed to catch up with his criticisms (many of the events that have happened since the 60s have sought to address many of the problems GGM pinpoints in the Funerals, such as the problem of political democracy and
the liberation theology developed by many catholic priests).
