DINA - The DINA (Dirección de Inteligencia Nacional) was the secret police of the Pinochet administration. Ostensibly, they served the purpose of gathering information regarding resistence to Pinochet. In fact, they functioned more as a means for eliminating opposition under any possible measures. They were responsible for the various covert operations by the government of the time including numerous atrocities involving the kidnapping, execution, etc. of various "dissidents".
CNI - The CNI (Central National de Informaciones) replaced the DINA in 1977 after it was dissolved under potential international pressure although it served many of the same functions as the DINA.
"caravan of death" - Immediately following the coup, a number of the military leaders rounded up numerous civilians in various localities and detained them. The "caravan of death" was the passage of General Sergio Arellano Stark "the butcher of the north" through these towns with prisoners. He and his soldiers would seemingly arbitrarily select part of the detainees, separate them from the rest of the group, and execute them, often brutally.
Copiapó - The population of this mining town in the Atacama desert tended to lean in favor of the Allende government. Lincoyán Zepeda of the Socialist Party was arrested here following the coup that overthrew Allende. Zepeda was interrogated regarding potential arms caches. He was detained with a number of other prisoners until October 16 when thirteen of the detainees were brutally executed.
Manuel Rodríguez Patriotic Front - This freedom-fighting group of the 1980's was responsible for numerous anti-Pinochet bombings and "terrorist" attacks including assassinations such as the attempted assassination of Pinochet in 1986.
Chilean plebiscite of 1978 - Pinochet ordered this plebiscite in order to reestablish the legitimacy of his authority under United Nations criticism. The population voted with a reported 75 percent in favor of Pinochet's regime. Pinochet used this to refute the United Nations' referendum on his administration.
