Macondo- mythical town in Big Mama's funeral that represents a microcosm of Latin America. Similar to many Latin American countries, most of Macondo is owned by this domineering European figurehead., Big Mama. Macondo is in many ways anachronistic with the many Iberian colonial legacies, i.e jus primae noctis was still occurring there.

monoculture economy- nonsustainable economy in which , raw materials and cash crops are exported and sold to industrialized nations. Example with mining, oil, and cash crops exported to Spain,Bitain, and Germany. Many scholars say that this leads to dependency as the LA countries exhaust their resources only to become dependent on foreign imports

maximilian von Hapsburg, was a prince from Austria. Under french decree, In 1864 he was declared supreme ruler of Mexico with French troops backing him. he was to restore mexico's political structure after the reform war of 1857-1860. he wasn'st liked by most mexicans. He was viewed as a aign of imperial Europe (France) dominating Mexico. After Naopeleaon withdrew his troops from Mexico. He died in 1867 in a firing squad.

fueros- special privileges for military and clerical members
This was inherited from the custom patria potestad in ewhich the elite families would place their second sons or cousins in cabildos, or the clergy in order to be able toobtain favors later on. hence, most LatinAmerican government continued with that tradition of granting special privileges to clerical and military members`

viceroy- the viceroy was supposed tobe the direct representative , or directly below the king in the new world. Example in 16th century one of Spain's viceory in Mexico was antonio de mendoza. Signifying European rule and colonialism being transplanted in the americas.

guilds-similar to what we have modern day labor unions. There used to be craft guids in latin america. These guild s were formed to promote economic stability in their respective trades
