ID #214 - Brazil as a "racial democracy"

The idea of Brazil as a "racial democracy" arises from the concept that Brazil is free of the racial prejudices seen in other countries. For example, it didn't enforce any racial segregation laws after the slaves were freed (in 1888) like the U.S. did with its Jim Crow laws. Statistics show, however, that there still is covert discrimination and racism in Brazil, but few Brazilians will admit this. Whites have tried to make the country "whiter" through miscegenation, or the mixing of races, but the country has actually gotten browner.
