La Violencia - lasted from 1948-early 1960s in Colombia. It started with the murder of Liberal populist Jorge Gaitán and the rioting that followed and ended with about 200,000 Colombians dead. It's still not understood too well, though it is thought to have consisted of a web of conflicts over land and labor associated with the postwar coffee boom, in addition to its political surface.

Ernesto Samper - Colombian president after Gaviria who was elected with financial support from the Cali cartel and spent his presidency under a cloud of suspicion. He worked fervently against drug traffickers, but his government was still "decertified by the U.S. in 1996 and 1997 for inefficient efforts to control drug trafficking.

National Front - pact between Liberals and Conservatives in Colombia in which the two parties alternated the presidency and shared power. It came as a result of La Violencia and lasted in its completeness from 1958-1974.

The Desmonte - this was the dismantling of the National Front from 1974 to 1990. The Liberals maintained their position as the majority party, but by mandate of the Constitution of 1886, the Conservatives still participated in the government. Every government during the desmonte tried to undertake political reforms, but all were impeded by judicial rulings and congressional opposition. Public order became difficult to maintain as popular discontent with many facets of the government grew.
