Subject: Explosion In Encino

A three-story apartment complex in Encino erupted in flames with heavy smoke following an explosion. It is not clear what caused the explosion. Debris showered on an adjacent parking lot and fire walls in the building likely were torn apart by the blast, which accounted for the rapid spread of the flames to all three floors.

One person may have suffered third-degree burns, and one person might have been killed, but those reports are unconfirmed. The complex, however, is a complete loss.

It could have been a natural gas explosion, based on the buckled appearance of the building and the debris scattered nearby.

About 130 firefighters, 26 engine companies were assigned to the blaze, which was in a building squeezed tightly amid other structures. About a third of those were battling the flames, with the rest involved in rescue operations and trying to keep the fire from spreading to adjacent structures.
