Subject: Perv Award For Woody Allen

Hollywood outsider Woody Allen, whose quirky, angst-ridden films have made him an industry in his own right, is bracing for his first visit to the media feeding frenzy that is the annual Cannes film festival.

Allen's latest film, Hollywood Ending, will open the May 15-26 festival in the southern French resort that becomes the center of cinema chic for the frenzied fortnight.

"I've been very, very lucky. Nobody tells me how to make my films, nobody sees my script or approves my casting," he said. "I don't work too hard. I'm not a perfectionist. Films are not my top priority."

"My films don't cost a tremendous amount of money, so, between the United States and Europe, it's fairly easy for me to raise sufficient money," he added.

In his new film Allen plays a neurotic film director temporarily rendered blind by stress as he is given one last chance to make a hit movie.

It is the latest in a string of films that began with What's New Pussycat in 1965 and included the 1972 seminal Everything You Wanted to Know About Sex, the 1977 hit Annie Hall, 1986's Hannah and Her Sisters and Deconstructing Harry in 1997.

Many of the films have included less than charitable digs at the Hollywood film machine, though Allen -- whose real name is Allen Stewart Konigsberg -- says he is actually very fond of Hollywood but glad not to be there.

"I've always felt affectionate toward Hollywood. I wouldn't want to live there but I like going there for a couple of days every now and then," he said.

But his success outside the Hollywood mainstream is eminently bankable.

Stars queue up to take parts in his films although the wages he pays are a pittance by Hollywood standards and his shooting methods are eccentric by any measure, given that he dislikes rehearsals and rarely shows his actors the full script.

He says the scandal a decade ago when he eloped with partner Mia Farrow's adopted daughter Soon-Yi Previn and was accused of child molestation is all behind him and he is looking forward to the future.

"I will make films as long as I have ideas, I can raise the money and people come to see them."
