I've had physical exams preformed by doctors from India,China, and America. Based on all the exams I've had the Indian doctors have been the most thorough. The doctors from China are thorough, but don't compare to the Indian doctors. I can't speak for everyone but this is my opinion. I like thorough doctors.

I've had one doctor from India, none from China, quite a few from America.

As I remember, the doctor from India was very thorough-going. I also remember her asking a lot of health-related questions before and during the exam -- definitely not the type to cut corners or let anything escape her detection.

Thoroughness is important, especially considering that this involves our health -- and we're paying good money for these sessions.

I've been to a total of three women physicians. Two were
internists and one was a dermatologist. All three were much, much more thorough than the any male doctor I've ever had.

I've also had a nurse-practitioner and a physicians assistant who were both female. They were also thorough, just as the doctors were.

My question is, are these women examiners just as thorough when their patients are women? Or are they give more complete examinations to males?

My wife and I have the same male doctor. He seems to be more thorough when she goes for her twice-a-year examinations.
I say this because she has to take off more and keep it off longer than I do for these exams.

I realize that this is only one case, so it is a stretch to say he is more thorough with women, but it seems that way.

I don't understand how you can judge the thoroughness of doctors in general by their gender. I've had very thorough and not thorough at all by both genders. I don't let male doctors get "too thorough" with me but much more often than not they don't even suggest that I drop my boxers. A few have but I refuse. Female doctors are about the same, only that I occasionally drop the boxers for them if I believe it's necessary.

But the point is, during most examinations I've had with male and female doctors they don't even suggest I get naked. Usually neither gender was more thorough than the other.

Some doctors are more thorough than others. No doubt about that. Most people say women tend to be more thorough than the typical male physician. That's "tend", but not uniformly. Some women may not be as thorough as other doctors. We're talking averages here, that's all.

As I said above, my wife and I have the same doctor. From her descriptions, it seems as though she get a more thorough exam than I do. I'm not sure why this is, but maybe she has more health issues than I do. Maybe she complains more about any symptoms she may have, so the doctor has to check. Who knows?

Bill said above that his wife gets more thorough exams from her male doctors than he gets from the same doctor. He is basing this on her description of what takes place during her visits and comparing this to his own experiences there.

In general, is there a tendency for examiners, be they doctors, nurse-practitioners, or physicians assistants, to give opposite sex patients a more thorough going over?

Or is Bill's comment just an isolated case?

I would go with an Indian doctor. Mine graduated from a school in Bombay, is very, very thorough. (I am 47 and she actually checks under my foreskin.) She prefers me to be naked for the last half of the exam -- but she asked me to do it rather than demanded it. I was nonplussed at first about that, but agreed, and now I like it. She is the first doctor who has ever given me a thorough dermatological exam during my annual physical. She takes a full 40 minutes of hands on time for the physical and another 20 of talk time. And she is young and good looking too. I like her, enjoy her accent and feel as though she really cares about how I am doing. If she is any indication, you cannot go wrong with an Indian doctor. Plus, did I say she was good looking?

I've been examined by three Indian doctors. 1 male 1 female internal medicine doctor 1 female student docter. The male doctor examined my genital's lying down on the table, then he let the foot stool out that connects to the table had me stand on that while examing my genitals, then while I was standing on the floor. The two female doctor examined everything and asked thousands of questions. The student doctor wanted to do a rectal exam but the head doctor told her that normally they what till 50 years old, i'am 27. Like I said the female doctors examined ankle's,legs,thorough abdominal exam acne everything. I never been examined that way by american doctors. That's real health care. They asked how my diet was, and I told them that I miss a meal sometimes and they scolded me and gave me a 15 minute lecture on my diet. I was blown away by the thorough and caring nature of the exams.

During another visit I was having sinus trouble and the female indian doctor that I had,examined my breathing with the stethoscope for 20 minutes. She was telling me exactly what she was examinig, and asking me question at the same time. It was relaxing having her move the stethoscope aruond my chest and back. I couldn't believe how thorough she was with the stethoscope. But that's the kind of doctor you want.

So I showed up this morning for my appt. Filled out the paperwork, paid co-pay. About 10 mins later a nurse called me back for height/weight, then ushered me into the doctor's "office" rather than an exam room. The doc showed up a few minutes later and wanted to chat about all sorts of general health questions. Before she came I took a look at the paper the nurse left on her desk, with my name on it. It was a form with organ system illustrations/body parts down the right margin, and check boxes down the left for eyes, ears, nose, throat, chest, arms, abdomen, etc. On the list was "genitals" and "rectal exam - sphincter, prostate, hemerrhoids." My hopes were rising , among other things! Finally she told me to follow her across to an exam room. The doc took my BP, listend to my chest, felt my neck - all with me fully clothed! I thought then she would tell me to strip, but no - nothing. Thanks...go get blood drawn...see you in three months! NO probing for me!!!!!

Oh well.....3 for 3 on this new insurance - no thorough physical exam. These POS docs seem to want to charge by the patient, rather than actually do any physical examination. Back to Kaiser, where if you go in for a sore throat they check your prostate, sore tooth - prostate check....hang-nail, prostate check!
