Date Posted: November 03, 2002 2:37:05 EDT Kam Fong Chun, known on television as Detective Chin Ho Kelly in the popular crime series "Hawaii Five-O," died in Honolulu on Oct. 18. He was 84 and died of lung cancer, his family said. Working under the stage name Kam Fong, he appeared on "Hawaii Five-O" from its debut, in 1968, until 1978, two years before the series was canceled. He was the trusted, tough detective working alongside the show's main character, Steve McGarrett, played by Jack Lord. Mr. Chun was a Honolulu Police Department officer for 16 years before leaving the force in 1959 devote himself to acting. He also ran a real-estate business and a talent agency before joining the show. In an interview Mr. Chun said he left "Hawaii Five-0" because he felt the scripts were becoming stale. The show's writers killed off his character, and in that episode, his dying words were, "It was all worth it." Mr. Chun's first wife and two young children were killed in June 1944 when a pair of military planes collided above Honolulu and crashed into their home below. His second wife, Gladys Chun, died this year. His survivors include his sons Dennis and Dickson; his daughters Brenda Chun and Valerie Chun; a granddaughter and great-granddaughter; his mother, Mary Powers; a brother, Herbert Chun; and two sisters, Vivian Wong and Helen Ching.
