Date Posted: November 06, 2002 1:10:03 EDT Will Grimsley, a sports reporter for The Associated Press for more than 40 years and the author of books on golf, tennis and football, died last Thursday in East Meadow, N.Y. He was 88. Mr. Grimsley covered 15 Olympics, 35 World Series and 25 Kentucky Derbies, among other major sporting events. He was born in Monterey, Tenn., and at 18, in 1932, he joined the sports staff of The Evening Tennessean in Nashville. He became sports editor and a columnist for the paper three years later. He was hired by The A.P. at Memphis in 1943 and transferred to New York as a sports writer in 1947. Mr. Grimsley served as president of the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association in 1985 and '86 and was also president of the United States Golf Writers Association and United States Tennis Writers Association.
