Date Posted: November 13, 2002 7:30:04 EDT John Woods, a former AmSouth Bancorp. executive who helped transform Birmingham into a financial hub, died Monday after an illness. He was 71. Woods served as the bank's chief executive officer from 1972 to 1995. AmSouth grew from $800 million to $18 billion in assets during that period, when Alabama law allowed banks to acquire out-of-state banks. Woods bought dozens, and Birmingham grew from a steel manufacturing city into the nation's fourth-largest banking center. Four of Alabama's banking companies now rank among the nation's top 50, and 57,000 Alabamians work in the banking industry. AmSouth is part of the Standard & Poor's 500 stock index, operates in six states, employs 11,900 people and has $40 billion in assets.
