YORK, S.C. -- Divers on Wednesday found the body of a 2-year-old girl who had been the subject an Amber Alert after she disappeared from the dock at a Lake Wylie home.

The sheriff's department said there was no evidence of foul play in Trinity Nicole Casey's death.

“It appears that the child died of drowning,” York County Sheriff Bruce Bryant said. “There is no reason for anything else to be suspicious about this case. The coroner will be making his examination. As of right now, there is no criminal wrongdoing that we can see on anyone’s part.”

The girl's body was found about 8 feet from the dock on Lake Wylie where she was last seen around 5:30 the evening before, during a family barbecue.

Police issued an Amber Alert early Wednesday after the girl's aunt said she had seen a man driving in the neighborhood about the time Trinity disappeared.

Bryant said he was disappointed with the way the Amber Alert was issued. Apparently, it only went out in South Carolina and did not go out in North Carolina, even though it is only a few miles to the state line.

In fact, he said that some authority in North Carolina decided not to put out the Amber Alert.

The family said that they only lost track of the girl for a matter of minutes. Upon realizing she was gone, one family member jumped into the lake, thinking she had fallen into the water.

"We were just all down at the water" having a barbecue, said Trinity's aunt Amanda Duncan, 26. "When I turned back around she was gone."

Eventually, police and neighbors joined the frantic search when no one was able to find her.

York County sheriff's deputies sent divers into the murky waters of Lake Wylie, and bloodhounds and helicopters searched by land and air.

The Casey family began to fear the worst Wednesday, however, when they were still unable to locate the child.

The family had moved to South Carolina from Illinois just a few days earlier.
