Subject: Dr. Milton Terris, Editor and Public Health Expert

[ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] Date Posted: October 28, 2002 9:25:29 EDT Dr. Milton Terris, who founded the National Association for Public Health Policy and the Society for Epidemiological Research, died on Oct. 3 at his home in South Burlington, Vt. He was 87. Dr. Terris was a past president of both organizations. He also founded the Journal of Public Health Policy and had been its editor for more than two decades when he died. Early in his career he carried out studies of nutrition, smoking, drinking and gun control and became an exponent of preventive health measures. For a dozen years, until he stepped down in 1980, he was chairman of New York Medical College's department of community and preventive medicine. He also taught at various medical schools and schools of public health. A native New Yorker, he held a bachelor's degree from Columbia, a medical degree from New York University and a master's in public health from Johns Hopkins. He married Rema Lapouse in 1941. She died in 1970. He is survived by his wife, Lillian Dick Terris; a son, Andrew David Terris of Halifax, Nova Scotia; a stepson, Alexander Blaikie Long of Menlo Park, Calif.; and a grandson.
