An ex-convict was arrested Monday on suspicion of fatally stabbing his mother, brother and a family friend with a kitchen knife before trying to set their house on fire, police said.

Police said Demetrio Mendez, 31, confessed and told them he became angry after his mother told him to move out of the house Sunday night.

"Unfortunately, three people died as a result of his rage and anger," police Capt. Francis Drexler said.

Prosecutors and the public defender's office did not know immediately whether Mendez had an attorney.

Mendez was released from prison last month after serving time for a domestic violence charge against a girlfriend, Drexler said.

Firefighters found the bodies after they were alerted to smoke coming from the family's house early Monday. The victims were identified as Gladys Mendez, 48, David Mendez, 29, and Andrew Luis Lopez, 67.
