Date Posted: March 24, 2003 2:41:04 EDT Umar Wirahadikusumah, vice president under Suharto, the former dictator, for five years in the 1980's, died today after complaining of a heart ailment, doctors said. He was 79. Mr. Wirahadikusumah, a retired general, was chief of the Jakarta army garrison during an abortive coup on Sept. 30, 1965. Suharto used the plot as a pretext for mounting a large-scale attack on the Communist Party and unseating Indonesia's founding president, Sukarno. Mr. Wirahadikusumah participated in the campaign, in which at least 500,000 Communists, trade unionists and others were killed in massacres.
