Date Posted: March 24, 2003 3:30:50 EDT Geraldo Franca de Lima, novelist and member of Brazil's Academy of Letters, died Friday of organ failure, hospital officials said. He was 89. Franca de Lima died after a long battle against diabetes. He was hospitalized for two months in the Clinica Sao Jose in Rio de Janeiro. Franca de Lima wrote 12 novels, among them "Branca Bela" ("White Beauty"), "Rio da Vida" ("River of Life") and "Serras Azuis" ("Blue Mountains") that was adapted into a television soap opera by the Rede Bandeirantes television network in 1998.
