Robert F. Morrell, 65, a former publisher of The Valdosta Daily Times, March 17 in Valdosta after a brief respiratory illness.

He twice served as Times publisher and also spent 20 years at The Tifton Gazette as managing editor, executive editor and publisher.

Morrell came to the Gazette in 1966 as managing editor. In 1970, he was appointed executive editor and in 1981 publisher. In 1986, he became publisher of The Valdosta Daily Times, where he remained until 1993.

In 1996, Morrell returned as publisher of The Valdosta Daily Times and the South Georgia Strategic Marketing Group for Thomson Newspapers. He retired from the company at the end of 1998.

He was chairman of the Georgia Associated Press News Council and president of the Associated Press Association of Georgia. He served on the board of directors of the Georgia Press Association.

Survivors include his wife, three sons and his mother.
