Date Posted: November 18, 2002 7:54:36 EDT The Rev. L. Venchael Booth, who helped organize the 2.5 million member Progressive National Baptist Convention, died Saturday in Memphis after a long illness. He was 83. The Washington-based convention, which includes about 1,800 Baptist churches, was created at a 1961 meeting Booth held at the Zion Baptist Church in Cincinnati, where he was pastor for 32 years. Booth also founded Olivet Baptist Church in suburban Silverton in 1984, and since 2001 he was minister of Church Upon the Rock in Anderson, Indiana until his health declined. Booth was a former member of the board of trustees of Central State University. He was also the first black trustee of the University of Cincinnati, a post he held for 21 years.
