Date Posted: November 26, 2002 7:02:45 EDT Gary Snow reminded everyone of his strength and love of music last month during a benefit concert held in his name at First Avenue. The Minneapolis rock bassist got onstage with his old bandmates in the Crash Street Kids, Flamin' Ohs and Curtiss A's group that night, even though he had undergone chemotherapy only a few days earlier. Snow, 46, died of complications from lung cancer at his home in Minneapolis Friday morning. The disease was diagnosed in July. A native of Grand Rapids, Minn., he is survived by his wife, Anne, and their two children, Sophie, 13, and Sam, 8. Snow moved to Minneapolis when he was 19 "just so he could join a rock 'n' roll band," said friend and fellow musician Melvin James. He would go on to perform with countless Twin Cities acts, including Planet Melvin, the Jack Buzzards, Pretty Uglies and Willie Murphy. The Crash Street Kids got attention from Playboy magazine and MTV in the early 1980s, in part thanks to a video directed by Chuck Statler for "Mystery Girl." "He was really a creative musician, and had better stage presence than any bassist I know," James said. Curtiss A remembered, "He was supportive of me and all the guys he played with. You really felt good having him in your band." Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Visitation Church, 4500 Lyndale Av. S., Minneapolis. The Gary Snow Memorial Fund, set up for the First Avenue benefit, is at the State Bank of Long Lake, P.O. Box 636, Long Lake, MN 55356.
