Subject: Open discussion on speed bumps

I started this forum as a way for busy people to share ideas and thoughts and generate interesting discussion about the traffic calming situation on West Leigh Drive.
As a parent of 2 young children, I find that I cannot allow my kids on the road at all, for fear of their lives, and as a result, our quality of life in the neighborhood is greatly diminished. My 10 year old daughter is an excellent bike rider, yet I will not allow her to ride down the road 1 mile to her piano teacher's home, or to another friends home on Old Ballard.
When the Geis's are away, my kids feed their cat. Our homes are steps away from each other, and again, I will not let them walk down the street alone.
Therefore, our family supports speed bumps as a gentle reminder that children, runners, bikers, and walkers all need to use the road for various reasons. A fed ex or UPS truck rounding the corners at 30-40 mph will never be able to stop in time to miss hitting a child on a bike.
A recent article in USA Today mentioned that speeding is a factor in almost 30% of fatal accidents, and of that, 20% happen in areas where posted speed limits are 35mph or less.
Please join me in opening an honest dialog as to how we can improve the quality of life in West Leigh. If you are opposed to the speed bumps, please give us feedback as to how other measures could help.
