張愛玲的世界并不是死,不是冷酷,只是一個真的、最人性的世界。
中國傳統小說一般m擁有一個樂觀的世界觀和倫理觀,總是一開始就認清這個世界可以洞察,善惡可以判明,人類即使受挫,信念卻不輕棄。可是,張的小說并不用這一套。
如其名作(金鎖記),不是人物最終胜利渡過災難,成為美德胜邪惡的力証,反是人性價值的破亡失落,一改溫情習慣,給人帶來陰森之感。但張在描寫陰森之中,也透露出對七巧的同情,在小說末寫七巧之死時,她強調七巧的瘦和垂死,又加插了年青時七巧的美和活潑作對比,其同情意味溢于言表,并不一味冷酷。
