As you can see, student development is a catch phrase for a very complex "system" of growth occurring in our students. Research tells us there are definite steps that students go through in their development. Just as a newborn baby must pass through different developmental steps, so much college students. Our goal is to provide an environment – both physical and social – in which our residents can continue their growth. As you mentioned, there is a necessity to provide different activities for different groups of students. Kristie mentioned that most likely, graduate students don't need a program on study skills. This is true in many ways and finding avenues to utilize the upperclassmen as a resource is a great idea to not only help in the development of the freshmen, but also the upperclassmen (in a role as educator).

During this conversation we were mainly talking about residents, but don't forget that your staff is also going through this development, not only as student but also as a staff. Finding ways of fostering this growth is challenging but very rewarding. Keeping these ideas in mind throughout the year will help everyone in the development of our staff and residents.
