Don't push the writing ... he obviously isn't able to do it at this point and THAT'S FINE!! Have you read the Moore's Successful Homeschool Family Handbook?? They have done TONS of research and they say parents shouldn't push formal eduction until ages 10-12 ... their brains are so much more developed by then. So, I adapt this to your situation and say, don't sweat it! Go ahead and have him tested b/c the results may help you.

I have a 7 yo son who is left-handed and writing is a bit tedious for him. We are using Handwriting Without Tears (http://www.hwtears.com/) - it is a wonderful curriculum and Ian does one page daily, usually. There isn't that much to write on each page ... just enough to practice without stressing the child.
