I've been wondering how it was going. Glad to hear the boys are enjoying themselves.

I'll have to see if I can get that George Washington Carver biography. All we have in town is a little local bookstore. It's a wonderful store and I shop there all the time, but it doesn't have everything. It does have more than our local library, though. She's good about ordering books if I can give her the title, so I always appreciate when people tell me specific books to look for.

We really got into the transportation unit. It was our favorite. Food inventions aren't quite so exciting, but we really needed a nutrition focus. Brittany is a very picky eater and doing all the nutrient searches and reading about why our bodies need certain nutrients is helping her, I think. I found a wonderful old science textbook that covers why our body requires certain foods. I think it's probably a middle school level book, but I've been reading it aloud and we've both enjoyed it. At first I was afraid the information would be dated, but it is surprising compatible with modern nutrition teaching.

It's funny because with both Brittany and me the best way to study inventions or history or similar topics is to study the people involved. My sister was saying they were the exact opposite. So even when we're studying the same topic, we're not really, because we're focusing on the people and they're focusing on the other aspects. I think that's what makes unit studies fun because you're free to go off on whatever tangents interests your particular family.

Oh, and guess what read aloud we're doing for this unit - Chocolate Touch. It's a totally silly book based on the story of King Midas only this is a boy who loves chocolate until everything that touches his mouth turns to chocolate. As silly as it is, though,it shows the importance of good eating habits. I'm sure before it's over we'll be dragging out The Seven Silly Eaters and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. Those are our two favorite picture books. Not only is the writing in each of the books well done, but the arwork is incredibly perceptive.

Well, I ramble...

Happy Homeschooling!
