Subject: We're putting on the final touches to our invention
In reply to: Liann 's message, "Re: Anyone else entering the invention contest?" on 22:49:05 01/28/03 Tue

She made a garden tool and it's not perfect, but it was the best of her ideas and I think it's pretty good. She didn't want to enter it because it does have some problems, but I explained to her that all inventions have little flaws and that inventors are constantly improving inventions. And of course we discussed how many attempts it took Edison to get the light bulb working.

The hard part for us was the written part of the contest. Luckily, it said an adult could type it, but it had to be in her words. It was like pulling teeth trying to get complete and coherent thoughts. After awhile, though, she got the concept and the last questions are much better. Now we've just got to go back and work on the first questions some more. Her diagram turned out really good.

I don't expect her to win anything, but like you said, I think it's a good experience just entering. It took a lot of discipline to stick with it and create something and maybe next year we'll be able to come up with something even better. And every kid who enters gets a certificate and free gift. She's hoping it's a tool.

The week after next we'll be taking MAT (an achievement test), then after that, we begin work on her science fair project. This year she's decided to do something with pulleys.

Happy Homeschooling!
