All I'll say is that the man is dead and cannot defend himself. However--and this is not meant to trivialize what anyone believes she suffered as a result of time spent with Gillen:

The disease was rampant during that time, and was known to make the rounds in certain rock circles. Ray could not "choose" to give a disease to any groupie who did not willingly agree to an unprotected encounter with him.

It is always personal responsibility to choose partners carefully and to protect oneself from contracting an STD. Credibility is a bit spotty when the natural presumption is that groupie behavior, typically not a one-time thing, led one to contract herpes or AIDS. Most likely there were other indiscriminate partners and acts around the same time. And during that era it's harder to know for sure.

Unless Gillen was your only lover and this was an exclusive, monogamous relationship, unless he poked holes in the condom you insisted on... he didn't "choose" to infect. My understanding is that he was in DEEP denial of his disease, so while reckless and irresponsible he may have been on his own, equally so were any partners who put themselves in a position to bear anything he carried then--presuming HE is the one who gave it to them to begin with.
